THE VILLAGE, A RESIDENCE COVETED BY WORKERS
The village originated from the building of houses, multi-storeyed in terraces, by merchants who carried out commercial activities near the city gates. Another factor in its birth is linked to the urban expansion of the city, due to the internal urban load and the need to enlarge the outer walls.
Today, a similar phenomenon is occurring as there is an increasing desire to move, for business reasons, from the city to the village. The study commissioned by Citrix to the research company OnePoll, on a sample of one thousand workers active in the area, showed that: 57% of respondents would move from the city to a rural area if they could continue to do their work remotely or in a flexible mode, and 76% would leave their main home as they believe it is possible to work anywhere.
Another interesting fact is the new vision of the worker, once the city was the ideal place to make a career, nowadays one in two (53%) would be willing to move to a small town and work remotely, even if this choice meant a decrease in salary.
The appeal of the village is definitely in the lifestyle as: costs are more accessible and one can lead an economically sustainable life; the air is cleaner due to less traffic and the presence of green areas; the daily rhythm is slower and, in addition, small towns offer the possibility to experience nature more, one can run or walk in the countryside breathing clean air.
THE VILLAGE AND REMOTE WORKING
Remote working is an important opportunity for villages, welcoming new workers would lead to an increase in the number of residents. Often it is not just individual workers who move, but entire families.
The village will have the opportunity to deal with new jobs, collaborating with local and non-local professionals, and distance itself from the marginal situation in which it is too often forced to stay. Even local talent in a context of renewal might decide not to abandon small towns in search of better opportunities.
For a village to be attractive, it will have to equip itself with services or enhance existing ones. Some of the actions financed by the PNRR are: cultural services and infrastructures; action to support communication and the dissemination of information on what the area has to offer; and activities to improve and rationalize the management of goods, services and initiatives.
INCENTIVES AND INITIATIVES IN THE VILLAGES
One village that has made the most of remote working is Santa Fiora in the province of Grosseto.
In fact, the ‘Santa Fiora smart village’ project incentivises the arrival of remote workers through an initiative that provides for the coverage of 50% of the cost of rent for an amount not exceeding 200 euro and lasting less than six months.
Another initiative, in the digital sphere, concerns the creation of the Borgo office platform. The intention is to support and promote stays in farmhouse and equipped farms, free of charge for a variable duration.
Employees are free to support the host structures, in an exchange of kindnesses, with the purchase of packages to support agricultural activities and 0 km production.
This form combines remote working with farm support with advantages for the employee who is welcomed without charge in a quiet place surrounded by nature; the host company as it receives economic support; and the village that enjoys the benefits the initiative generates on tourism.
Some of the villages included in the packages, which can be consulted on the village office platform, are: Caldonazzo in Trentino, Bertinoro in Emilia-Romagna, Montemarzino in Piedmont and Micciano in Tuscany.
